Introducing Reading to Kids – Part 1: The Bedtime Story Habit

There is no "best way" to introduce reading to kids if you force them into it. Children can't be pushed into loving books, but they can be gently led there. Children can't be pushed into loving books, but they can be gently led there.
Today, most parents are working, and finding quality time with our children is harder than ever. Meanwhile, many kids spend much of their free time on mobile phones and screens. So how do we build a reading habit in children without turning it into a battle?
The answer might be hiding in the last 20 minutes of your day.
Why the Last 20 Minutes Before Bed Matter
The quiet time before your child falls asleep is precious. Instead of ending the day with screen time, turn it into story time. Once the bags are packed for tomorrow and the bed is made, start a new family habit: reading bedtime stories together.
How to Start the Bedtime Reading Habit
1. Let your child choose the book. Keep 3–4 story books ready and let your child pick one. It could be a simple story, a short tale, or a comic book. Having the choice makes children feel involved and excited.
2. Read it aloud to them. You don't need to be a perfect storyteller. Use your voice, pause, and enjoy the story together. What matters most is that you are there, spending time with them.
3. Stay consistent for 10–20 days. Habits take time. Make bedtime reading part of your routine every night for two to three weeks. Slowly, you may notice something wonderful: your child walking up to you with a book in hand, asking you to read.
A Little Trick to Spark Curiosity
Here's a fun way to test your child's curiosity: stop reading just before the exciting part.
Then watch what happens. Do they ask you to keep reading? Do they want to know what happens next? That spark of curiosity is the beginning of a lifelong reader.
More Than Just Reading
This simple routine does more than build a love for books. It gives busy parents a guaranteed moment to connect with their children every day, and it gives children memories they will cherish for a lifetime.
Nobody can force anyone into reading. But with a little effort and a few minutes each night, you might soon find a little reader in your home, searching for new books so you can read them together at bedtime.
